I'm most likely going to main Mega Man.  I made a similar promise as soon as I saw Pokemon Trainer revealed on the Dojo.  I had a chance to play as Mega Man at the Best Buy Smash Fest.

He has a lot of ranged options but, from what I could tell, they all fired pretty slow.  His close ranged options are few but useful.  Unfortunately, as he is right now, I can't see him being very high on the tier list.  Hopefully they buff his firing speed a little.

I'm not that big of a Mega Man fan, but he looks really well made in this game. As people have said before, Nintendo seems to be doing a better job with Mega Man than Capcom has in the past years lol. Lucky that you played it at Smash Fest... I wanted to play it but the closest one was 3.5 hours away. Sad

As random as this sounds, I'm also kinda curious to see what alternate colors Mega Man will have. I've seen him with Items/Rush colors, Wood Man color, and Metal Man color. I'd like to see Napalm Man colors since I always thought that was a cool color combo. I wonder if he will have an alternate costume as well... Protoman and/or Bass maybe? (I know obvious choices lol)

Off-topic but I'm insanely jealous that you got to play smash 4, Kaze. Wanna give us your impressions (maybe in another thread)?

With all the costumes people seem to be getting in this game, I expect Mega Man to get no fewer than ALL of his weapon colors.  It would be great if we had such a choice.

Also I'll organize my thoughts and post a Smash Fest topic later.

I'll be posting my thoughts and insights on his moveset every now and then here.

Thoughts from the demo:
* Mega Man's jab, nair, and ftilt all fire the Mega Buster.  The best part about his jab is that you can jump, walk, or stop firing at any point during the animation.  His jab combo has some bad ending lag on it, but it can be cancelled with any sort of jump which is fantastic.  The little lemon shooter is also great at cancelling other projectiles.

* Metal Blade is a bit problematic in that it can be caught.  However, even with the slower rate of fire, it can still be used pretty often.  It is pretty nice that you can throw it in 8 directions no matter which way you're facing.  It's great for ripping through opponents and Villager trees.  You can maximize your rate of fire by interchanging between Metal Blade and Crash Bomb (assuming no custom moves).  Picking it up from the ground and then throwing it will get you more throw speed and damage.

Thanks for the info Kaze! I just got the demo. At first the Mega Buster's omnipresence was annoying but now that you mentioned the jab combo can be cancelled with a jump, that expands his options a lot. He's a really interesting character.

Rush is great for escaping bad situations or at least resetting them.  If you bounce off a grounded Rush a second time you can use him again in the air!

When recovering, if you haven't used your second jump yet, you can actually use Rush first and then use your second jump.  I died a few times while playing because I apparently had used my second jump when I thought I didn't.  Still neat.

Yeah, Mega Man's really fun. I love all of his aerials so much. Dat uair.

Question: How do you use the Leaf Shield? I've never quite understood what it does.

General consensus is that Leaf Shield is not very good.  It takes 1 second to start up and only lasts 1.5 seconds before it vanishes.  It limits what you can do as when active (move, roll, or grab).  You can't even use your recovery move with it active so don't use it off stage.

It is good at ripping through projectiles being shot at you, but the Mega Buster can cancel most small projectiles.  It also gives you some extra damage if you grab someone while it is out (usually 2-6% extra).

Yeah, that blade is so fun to use.

Anyway, thanks for the info Kaze, I hadn't considered using it to block projectiles but that seems pretty effective. I also didn't know you could grab while it's active.

I don't know how well this holds up for other characters, but Mega Man can use his recovery even while holding a Hammer/Gold Hammer.  Just did it today. And to add context to the time I did it, I got a hammer, was knocked off the stage, fell below the lip of the stage, and used Rush to bounce back up and grab the ledge while still holding the hammer.

Also Villager can steal the dog.

It seems that what I did was an existing...bug? I was in the tumble state while I was falling and it seems all characters can still recover for a little bit in that state.

Nah, it isn't related to that. It's just a special fall state that allows people to attempt to recover while still holding a hammer.

As for Mega Man:
Fire the Mega Buster and short hop backwards to get a little space between you and your opponent.

* True to his games, Mega Man has excellent aerial control. While he isn't the fastest fighter, he can definitely pull some nice mind games with his jumps. There is very little sign that he's used his second jump and, even without it, he can bob and weave very nicely in the air.
